New postSkype Lite for Java and Android phones

Skype Lite for Java and Android phones

Android phones will now have at least one edge over Apple’s iPhone: They’ll be able to make Skype calls. Announced today by Skype COO Scott Durchslag at the Consumer Electronics Show, the new Lite version of Skype will offer voice calling to other mobile or desktop versions of Skype, but doesn’t yet offer video calling. The Lite version of the popular VOIP (voice over IP) software also works on more than 100 Java-enabled phones from five handset manufacturers—LG, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. “Making the Skype experience available for download to Android-powered devices, as well as hundreds of other mobile phones from the world’s leading handset manufacturers is a major step forward for Skype,” said Scott Durchslag, COO of Skype.

“Nearly half the world’s population are mobile phone users today and we know that many people who already use Skype want the option to use Skype on their mobile phones. We are committed to working towards our goal of getting Skype into the pockets of the mobile masses.” Also today at CES, the eBay-owned company announced that the next version of its extremely popular Windows version, Skype 4.0 would launch in early February. The update to this software, which is used by over 370 million people worldwide, has been in beta since last spring. A third announcement made today at CES was the availability of Skype 1.0 Beta for Intel-based Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs). The company worked with Intel to develop a new mobile version of Skype for MIDs based on the Intel Atom processor and Moblin-based Linux OS.

New postMore than 30 Celebrities Twitter's Accounts Hacked

More than 30 Celebrities Twitter's Accounts Hacked

More than thirty celebrities and organizations - President-Elect Barack Obama, Britney Spears, Bill O’Riley, CNN anchor Rick Sanchez and Fox News - had their twitter accounts hijacked on Monday. Giving the information, the microblog site said that the hacking attack led to bogus and inapt messages being posted on their accounts. In this latest security problem for Twitter, the sham messages Fox News Twitter included comments about Bill O’Reilly’s sexuality, and Britney Spears’ private parts, among others. Rick Sanchez had a posting about drugs on his account. A social-networking blog site, Twitter allows users to send status updates, or “tweets,” from cell phones, instant messaging services and Facebook, in not more than 140 characters.

The company said that its own internal support tools had been used to hack the accounts. The support tools - which are used by the company’s support team for helping users in editing e-mail addresses associated with their Twitter account and other such things - were used by the hacker to compromise the hijacked accounts. The hacking of accounts followed a nasty phishing scam on Twitter, over the weekend. According to the site, during the spam, regular Twitter users could possibly have been tricked into logging on to a page masked as the Twitter front page.

New postPS3 Price Will Drop $299 in June

PS3 Price Will Drop $299 in June

Shortly after EEDAR’s Jesse Divinch weighed in with his forecast of NPD Group’s December game sales–expected this Thursday–another game-industry wise man stepped up to the plate. Wedbush Morgan’s oft-quoted Michael Pachter nearly concurs with his peer, predicting that more than 3.25 million Wiis were sold domestically during the month, followed by 1.35 million Xbox 360s and 750,000 PlayStation 3s. Software-wise, Pachter thinks that December saw a 10 percent rise in monthly US software sales, from $2.39 billion in 2007 to $2.63 billion in 2009. He believes the top games of the month were (in no particular order) Guitar Hero World Tour, Call of Duty: World at War, Gears of War 2, Rock Band 2, Wii Fit, and Prince of Persia. Though the NPD numbers cover only console games, he also doffed his hat to the wildly popular PC expansion pack World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King.

By the analyst’s estimate, $2.42 billion of US game software sales were for the PS3, Wii, 360, PSP and DS, with the remaining $205 million coming from games for legacy systems. He thinks that PlayStation 2 game sales will continue to fall by roughly half each month, having slid 51 percent year-on-year in November and an estimated 54 percent year-on-year in December. Although his comments on the PlayStation 2 were noteworthy, it’s Pachter’s predictions for the PlayStation 3 that will likely pique gamers’ interest. The financial veteran believes that, after being relegated to third place in the console race by the 360’s $199 price drop in September, the 80GB PS3 base model will be cut from $399 to $299 in April.
