New postStep-By-Step To Get Rid Of Spylocked or Iesmin.exe

Step-By-Step To Get Rid Of Spylocked or Iesmin.exe

Yesterday, my laptop has been infected by Spylocked spyware. I believe that it is due to my brother has installed a fake anti-spyware.

Windows keeps giving me a warning that I have spyware and that i should get rid of it.Spylock kept coming up, and even though I've uninstalled it, the icon keeps flashing in system tray...

If you open the Task Manager, you will see iesmn.exe, iesmin.exe, imsmain, imsmn in the process. That's the spyware. Iesmin.exe is actually Trojan-Downloader.Zlob.Media-Codec.

After searching some info about the virus, I am able to remove the spyware. So, what you have to do to get rid of this spyware?

First, kill the process of those I've stated above one by one in the Task Manager.

Then run Hijack This or Startup Manager to remove iesmin.exe and the gang from Windows startup.

Final step, after making sure that iesmin.exe and the gang are not running in the process( open Task Manager and look at the process whether they still running or not ), go to

C:\Program Files\Video ActiveX Access\ and find iesbpl.dll and delete that file.

DONE !!! Now you will be able to remove the spyware manually.

New postLatest Form Of Computer Attacks - Denial Of Service

Latest Form Of Computer Attacks - Denial Of Service

What are Denial of Service Attacks?

Denial of service attacks are the most recent form of computer attacks which aim to hinder or destroy e-commerce and e-business being done on the Internet. Denial of service is when attackers try to stop or disrupt legitimate users from accessing information from a certain resource. Put simply it is when an attacker intentionally tries to stop visitors from visiting a website.

There are four main types of denial of service attacks. The first is a flood attack. A flood denial of service attack is where attackers hog the bandwidth to a certain site so that no other visitors can go through. The second type of denial of service attack is when a connection between two machines is interrupted thereby limiting services. The third type of denial of service attack is stopping a specific user from accessing a service, and the fourth type of denial of service attack is when a service is denied to a specific user.

How are Denial of Service Attacks done?

The most common way is to consume limited resources like bandwidth so that no others can use it. Another common way is to fill up disk space with garbage information so that the computer or server can not function. The less common but more dangerous way is when the attacker alters configuration data so that the computer will not function correctly or even open up other security holes. Recently this was done to over 750 western websites by Islamic extremist who were protesting a military action.

How Can I Defend Against Denial of Service Attacks?

The best defense is front end application hardware such as Radware’s DefensePro. Firewalls are useless against flood attacks because they get swamped with data. A firewall is designed to stop viruses and Trojans which are small. Front end application hardware is intelligent so it can monitor all traffic in real time. When it detects a flood attack it simply closes down access from the attacker’s point of origin while still allowing good traffic through the network. Another advantage to having intelligent defense is that it recognizes when configurations are being altered and can stop alteration attacks before they start or are allowed to do damage.

New post7 Must Knows For Windows Vista Newbies

7 Must Knows For Windows Vista Newbies

By : Aaaron Brooks

Not all computer users are tech savvy and attuned to blogs, forum discussions, and reviews of the great new expectation of 2006 the Windows Vista Release. For everyday computer user things like administrator control or enhanced security has little or no meaning. All he or she looks for is a computer that works smoothly, allows them to enjoy the World Wide Web and simple functions like email, photos, and perhaps online shopping.

According to those in the know Windows Vista is all set to open many doors of delight.

1. According to Bill Gates, Microsoft is planning to allow DirectTV subscribers to “move shows from their set top boxes to Windows PCs, or even the Xbox 360 or other mobile devices. This is to be a part of the “Plays for Sure” plan.

2. Vista is all set to have a swanky new Messenger which will steal minds and hearts of users and function smoothly too.

3. Music played on a PC will reach new levels with the swanky new Windows Media Player 11 which is being launched with Windows Vista. This will sort, file, and mix and match music according to the likes of the user. You can view the music according to say genre or even type.

4. The Windows Vista Media Center will allow uninterrupted viewing of high definition digital cable.

5. Vista is designed with futuristic photo editing tools that will change the way photos are viewed or stored or shared. Every Vista user will have enhanced features and will be able to edit and print studio quality photographs. Photos can be sorted by date, keywords, or any other individual system.

6. That Vista graphics will be state of art is well known but inbuilt in Vista is Flip 3D a tool that will allow users to shift among multiple open windows and a side bar that will run in the corner continuously.

7. Vista users will be able to use a new slideshow to mix video images and still photos.

As far as gaming is concerned Vista reaches for new heights with enhanced graphics, 3D effects, and real to life projections. Gaming will take on new dimensions with the launch of Windows Vista.

Vista is being promoted by Microsoft as the ultimate OS, what the release will bring will be known only when the actual system is released towards the end of 2006. Fairly advanced Vista users will have to tweak their hardware systems or purchase a new dream machine. The Windows Vista according to promos is all set to bring “clarity to the world” and open new vistas in computing. The program addresses needs at all levels personal and professional and the system is such that it can be tweaked to suit individual needs.

The keys for Vista according to an FAQ constructed by http://www.winsupersite.com/faq/vista.asp are connected, clear, and confident, stating that Windows Vista will take you to new levels of connectivity, give you the user clarity in the interface and the ways in which you organize your work, and ensure that you are confident always that your privacy and data is protected at all times.

Vista is all set to conquer new vistas in computing

New postDo You Know Virtual Modem?

Do You Know Virtual Modem?

The simplest answer is it virtually use as real modem.Virtual Modem PRO creates software virtual IP-modems and maps them to virtual serial ports in your operating system. Virtual modems fully emulate standard hardware modems. The main difference between standard modems and the virtual ones, created by Virtual Modem PRO, is that instead of using conventional telephone line they use Ethernet network, including Internet, VLAN, VPN, etc.

How Virtual Modem Work?

Virtual modem attached to a virtual serial port, works in the same way as the real one (supports Hayes AT commands), however it uses TCP/IP protocol to establish connection to remote host. To create such connection the first virtual modem (local host) should be configured as a TCP/IP server that listens to incoming connections, while the other one (remote host) should be configured as a client to initiate the call. Every instance of the virtual modem could be configured to be server or client at any time depending whether you want to generate outgoing call or accept it (same as the standard modems).

In addition, you may specify the TCP port which will be used to establish the link and IP-address or hostname of the server to connect to. In order to establish such client-server connection you should install and set up Virtual Modem PRO on both ends. Single license allows you to install and use Virtual Modem PRO on two computers in a network.

The file is very small and you can download it here:-

New postHow To Reset Firefox's Configuration?

TIPS OF THE DAY - How To Reset Firefox's Configuration?

For those who have change the Firefox's configuration setting at about: config that want to reset what they've change, I will show you how to do that.

For me, I've change a lot of settings to increase the performance of my Firefox. Yeah, after following some guides from the Net, it's working. But then I noticed that after changing some values in configuration files, there has been a lot of memory leaks. When I opened the Task Manager, memory usage for Firefox has increased a lot about 310 000 K . Unfortunately, I do not have a BIG RAM. So, 310 000 K means a lot to me.

The files that I've changed the values to increase performance( if you have a BIG RAM ) are:-
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server
network.http.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.max-connections
network.http.max-connections-per-server
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy

So, how to reset the settings? Simply go to the configuration files, choose the choose the line that you want to reset. Let say network.http.max-connections-per-server. Right click on it then Reset.
DONE !!!.

New postHow Do I Change My Home Page To Google ?

How Do I Change My Home Page To Google
By: Michael Baker

I am often asked the question: How do I change my home page to google? It is a very simple process to change your home page on your browser. Most people use either Internet Explorer or Firefox, now, so the following steps will help you change your home page in either browser you are using to Google.

If you are using Internet Explorer:

  1. Launch Internet Explorer
  2. Click on the "Tools" tab. For IE 7, it is now located on the right hand side of the screen
  3. A pop up window will open
  4. Click on the "General" tab
  5. Where it says "Home Page", then type in the Google website address
  6. Click OK

If you are using Mozilla's Fire Fox:

  1. Launch your Fire Fox browser
  2. Click on the "Tools" tab. It will be at the top of the screen
  3. Scroll down and click on the ?Options? button
  4. A pop up window will open
  5. Click on the "Main" tab
  6. At the top of the window, you will see a "Start up" section
  7. Ensure the section: When Firefox starts ? says "Show my home page"
  8. In the blank below, then type in the Google website address
  9. Click OK

The above method is what I do if I want to change my home page to Google. And this can actually go for any other website as well. Just follow the same steps, and change the website to whatever website you want. Now, if your home page changes unexpectedly, then you have spyware or some other program on your computer making this happen. Only you should be the one to change your browser home page.

This is almost totally a hardware issue. You computer is made up of thousands of parts. Its not unheard of that one of them can become unhinged. Overheating can cause expansion of wires and melt some sensitive. High pitch noises such as squealing or whining sounds can be cause electronic components. Whatever the reason, you conduct a small investigation. Remove the case and run the computer to discover the origin of the computer problem. If its not a simple matter such as a loose wire or fan issue, it may be time to call a computer tech.

5. Your home page, default search engine, or web browser has changed itself.

This is also known as "high-jacking". Spyware has been installed on your computer via social networking or from email link. This action has allowed spyware to install a java script into your web browser. The spyware then sends a message to your browser to change your user settings. For example change your home page to another web page.

As you have discovered from reading the article, the most common computer problems can be handle quite easily by simple maintenance of your PC. Net time you are suffering from computer problems. Take a few minutes to run some diagnostic test before rushing out to computer technical center claiming your PC is broken. When all you need to do was just make sure it was plugged in.

New postWork On Windows, Rely On Linux

SftpDrive ver.1.6.0

Work On Windows, Rely On Linux, SftpDrive. You can map your SSH server as a Windows network drive with SftpDrive. Their SFTP file system network enables all your Windows applications.

Don't drag and drop. Don't transfer back and forth. Just use your network files directly from your applications. SftpDrive network-enables all your Windows applications by enabling you to map your SSH server as a network drive. Save and edit files directly on your server. Perfect for any web developer or programmer that runs Windows, but relies on Linux.

VPNs are useful. You can access your network and files from anywhere on the Internet safely and securely. But what if you don't have a VPN? It can take months and thousands of dollars to install and administer a complicated VPN. SftpDrive lets your applications access your files from anywhere on the Internet safely and securely, like a VPN, without the VPN.
You already have SSH! You don't need another server.

SSH is the industry standard for remote access to Linux, Mac OS X, and UNIX computers because it's safe, secure, and just works from anywhere on the Internet. SSH servers like OpenSSH and VShell have a powerful system called SFTP built-in. Unrelated to the archaic FTP protocol, SFTP is a modern, secure system that gives you the power to treat your network files as if they were right on your desktop. Stream movies and music. Run programs. Load and save any file from any application.

Best of all, your SSH server is ready to go.

You can download the software here:-

New postHow To Limit Internet Usage Of Your Network ?

How To Limit Internet Usage Of Your Network ?

Well, the simplest solution is to use What we call it "Bandwidth Controller".

Bandwidth Controller is a complete traffic shaping package for Windows 2000, XP and 2003 Server. It allows network administrators to limit internet usage in real-time using a high performance processing core.
The bandwidth manager can be installed on each computer on the network or deployed centrally on a gateway or internet server. Not only does this help to save bandwidth but it also provides a network free of congestion caused by large downloads, P2P, games and video streaming.

The built-in bandwidth meter makes it possible to view all bandwidth usage with the option to limit each connection separately. Traffic streams are allocated by the manager using a system of fair sharing so that each computer is given equal access to the internet resource. Time-sensitive data such as VoIP is prioritized over other traffic, maintaining a high quality of service for important applications.

New postMy Working Area..Let's Take a Look

My Working Area..Let's Take a Look

Yeah..I've been busy for the last 3 weeks because I'm doing some cabling stuff and LCD's Projector setup at UITM Machang. My company( where I'm working for) got a tender to do cabling, computer maintenance and setting up Projectors for 2 years.

Since I'm in Networking Field, its a great experience for me. By doing this stuff, I hope that I might be able to polish up my skills to achieve higher level. I've took some photos and want to share with all of you.

This month, there's only a little work. So, I'm staying at the office doing some computer repairing, and if don't have any work to do, I simply watch the TV with the rest of my partner Poxki, Po'ox, Ida, Yah, Abe Yie, Abe Igie, Mat Yieh and others. The interesting part is, all of us really like the Indonesian drama, "Bukan Cinderella" i guess. At 2.30 p.m, all of us are already in front of TV.

That's all for now.

New postPanasonic IT Seminar

Panasonic IT Seminar

Today, all the computer companies around KB city were invited to attend "Panasonic IT Seminar" at Panasonic Service Center. The Company I'm working for ( my industrial training actually) asked 2 seniors, Dasuki( my partner) and ME to attend the seminar. I'm really happy.

The seminar started at 2.00 p.m. Well all of us were given 1 folder each. When I looked inside, I'm very surprised that each of us got 1 FREE DVD-RAM ( Panasonic Brand of course ). The seminar actually talking about their new products :-

1) Blu-ray disc, DVD-RAM
2) Multi DVD Drive that support SATA ( that's really cool when I first heard about it )
3) Camera(CCTV) Network( wireless & wired ) - how to setup CCTV on existing network, new network, types of CCTV available, how to access CCTV via internet, 3G & GPRS...
4) LCD Projector - Brand new Projectors that have a lot of new features including ability to record the audio. I'm really impress with the products.

In conclusion, I'm really satisfied and glad that I attend the seminar. So many things I've learn and I even get a FREE DVD-RAM.

New postDid Your Home Page Setting Change Unexpectedly ?

Did Your Home Page Setting Change Unexpectedly
By: Michael Baker

If you have ever had your internet browser home page setting change unexpectedly, then you have some sort of a malicious program on your computer. There are websites out there, which can install software on your computer and change settings such as your home page. The reason they do this is strictly for a monetary reason for them. If your home page is changed to their home page, it can give them extra website visits, and maybe you even buy or click on something from their site. Or, they can actually be tracking all of your internet movements now. So, if your home page setting changed unexpectedly, then you need to change it back.

Normally, spy ware being downloaded on your computer is what initially causes this. This little script of code will go into your computer and start changing settings, and basically hijacks your computer. It now will know what you are looking at, what words you are typing on your keyboard, and which websites you are visiting. You need to get rid of this stuff. But getting rid of this might not change your home page setting.

The spy ware will get into the registry files, and change this homepage setting without you knowing. You will then need to get into the registry files and get this fixed as well. I would first start with the registry files, and get these corrected back to their normal settings. If you have anything wrong with your computer, or it just does not act the way it used to, you have a problem in the registry files.

Registry files tell the computer how to act. So, if they are messed up, or changed, the computer starts acting wrong, or different. In order to correct these errors, you need to scan the registry files and find these errors. Then get these errors fixed. If you can do this at least once a week, you will keep your computer running fine, and error free.

Since you browse websites on the internet, and even download software and music, chances are you will have your home page setting change unexpectedly. If this happens, you need to find and fix these errors in your registry. This is the only way to get your computer back.

Michael Baker is a Computer Optimization Technician, and recommends getting a Free Computer Scan to fix any problems such as computers freezing, locking up, restarting for no reason, and getting the blue death screen.

New postHow to Clear Cache

How to Clear Cache

The cache is where your web browsers stores parts of websites you visit online. The goal is to speed up your web browsing experience by keeping parts of the website stored on your computer in the "cache" as opposed to downloading them again. These means that pages you visit regularly are loaded quicker. Internet Explorer users will know the cache as "Temporary Internet Files."

What Files Are Stored in the Cache?

All types of files related to the websites you visit are stores in the cache. These include image files like JPEG or GIF files. The actual web page HTML file can also be downloaded and stored on your computer.

Why Should I need to Clear the Cache?

There are a couple of issues you need to be aware of. Firstly, the cache takes up space on your hard disk which could impact your computer's performance. Also you may find that it is necessary to re-load a web page to get the most up to date version. However, the biggest issue relates to your privacy.

Your web browser's cache leave a virtual "paper trial" of the websites you visit. A person with access to your web browser's cache could easily figure out which website you visit and see examples of the content which could potentially be very embarrassing!

How to Clear the Cache?

Here are the instruction for the 2 most popular web browsers - FireFox and Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer - from the main menu bar select Tools>Internet Options. Select "temporary internet files" or "browsing history" (in Internet Explorer 7) and hit the "Delete" button.

FireFox - from the main menu bar select Tools>Internet Options>Privacy. The go the "Private Data" section, select "settings" and make sure "cache" is selected. You can then click the "Clear Now" button to clean the cache. In newer version there is a short cut key so you can clear your cache without having to navigate through the menu options.

Is there an Easier Way to Clear the Cache?

The cache is not the only set of files that your computer collects which can cause serious privacy issues. Your browser for example stores a history of the URLs you visit. The Windows operating system also stores a list of files you recently accessed including media files like videos which you download.

Thankfully there are a number of good software products which help you clear out all of these files. This a critical part of protecting your privacy and helps boost your computer's performance. My recommendation is below. Try a free scan and see what potential privacy risks are lurking on your computer.

New postDeleting Search History

Deleting Search History
By: Richard Rogers

The good news is that it is relatively easy to delete the search history which is stored by your web browser on your computer. There are 2 types of information which need to be cleared to delete your searches:

1. Form History - the web browser recognizes the search box you type your search query into as a "form." Both Internet Explorer and FireFox store this information for a set number of days.

2. The search history in any web browser toolbar, like the Google toolbar, you use.

Here is how you delete your search history stored in "forms" in the most popular browsers.

Internet Explorer: Select Tools>Internet Options>Content>Click "AutoComplete">clear "Clear Forms"

Internet Explorer 7: Select Tools>Internet Options>General>in "Browsing History" click delete. Please note that this action also clears temporary internet files, URL history, cookies and passwords which is highly recommended.

Mozilla Firefox: Select Tools>Options>Click on the "settings button" in Private Data>select "Saved Forms Information"

To delete searches in the Google toolbar you need to click on the Google Icon and select "clear search history." To delete search history in other toolbars please refer to the help menu.

Another important thing to consider doing (aside from Internet Explorer 7 which does this for you when you delete "Browsing History") is to clear the URLs you visit from the address bar on your browser. If you are really concerned about someone seeing which sites you visit then you should also take this clearing out one step further by deleting the cookies and temporary internet files or cache.

Given how much information you need to be careful of it is much easier and takes less time to use a good software product to clean out your sensitive web browsing data and delete searches. My recommendation is below. Try a free scan and see what potential privacy risks from your web browser, instant message chats and other files are lurking on your computer.

Richard Rogers is a PC enthusiast and runs a number of PC related sites. If you are worried about your privacy then take a free scan of your computer here - Free Privacy Scan

New postDVD Player Software Reviews Top Features and DVD Players

DVD Player Software Reviews Top Features and DVD Players
By: Richard Seng

Most people enjoy watching movies, but few know what to look for in a DVD player. From basic beginnings to important features, this will help you decide what DVD player is best for you.

DVD players have three important parts?the drive motor, a laser and lens system, and a tracking mechanism. The DVD is made up of information spiraled in a pattern of incredibly tiny ?bumps? which can be read by the DVD player. The drive motor of the DVD player spins the DVD at a specific speed?between 200 and 500 rotations per minute. Meanwhile, the laser and lens focuses on and ?reads? the bumps on the DVD. Meanwhile, the tracking mechanism makes sure the laser follows the spiral track of bumps. As these parts work together, the video and audio is projected onto your screen for viewing.

Different DVD players have different features. Most play DVD movies, music CDs and video CDs (such as music videos). The player uses various types of decoder, depending on what kind of DVD player you own. Some DVD players simulate surround sound, makig it seem that you have surround sound even though you might have only two speakers.

Computer-operated DVD players are often very easy to use, with many extra features. Parental control features let you decide what types of movies your children are watching. You can take pictures from different movies and save it as an image, and a few types of DVD player software lets you set the movie as your desktop. The movie plays as a background so you can watch the movie while working on other areas of the computer. Some let you bypass region codes, meaning you can watch movies from all parts of the world.

When choosing a DVD player, it is best to consider the types of features it has. Are parental controls necessary? Do you want to be able to watch different types of movies? Often, the more features available, the better.

Features:

Check to see how easy it is to use the DVD player. If it is too complicated, you?ll never want to use it. A good DVD player is simple to understand, and installation a breeze. Make sure you check that the software doesn?t conflict with other programs on your computer.

Check audio and video quality. These should be customizable so you can choose the best settings for your location. The video should be colorful and easy on the eyes, and the audio should be clear.

Yet another important aspect of the DVD player is the help section. If you have a problem, you should be able to find and understand the help document without being overwhelmed by technical terms and jargon.

Though there are many DVD players to choose from, just taking a little amount of time will let you find a great DVD player that you will enjoy for years.

Top DVD Player Software

1. WinDVD

2. PowerDVD

3. MyDVD Studio

You can find the top rated DVD MultiMedia software programs along with discounts that range from 10% to 25% Off at DVD Player Software Reviews

New postRunning Microsoft Vista on MacBook Works Like a Charm

Running Microsoft Vista on MacBook Works Like a Charm
By: Anja Glauch

  • The very first thing after setting up my brand new sparkling white MacBook (2GHZ) to install necessary updates and download Boot camp. Bootcamp is a partition manager and currently still available for free as it is in BETA. By then I already had some concerns as I had only bought an update to an old 2K license I have which would require a "clean" update anyway - so fingers crossed and let's hope for the best!
  • I should have read the Boot Camp user file first - than I would have know that the Win2K update was a bit too ambitious! Luckily I had not opened the my Vista Home Premium upgrade box an could return it and buy the FULL version.
  • With all the requirements fulfilled I took a deep breath and started the process in MacOSX:
  • Read the "read me" file coming with Bootcamp
  • Print out the User guide (or have it on a second PC)
  • Installing Bootcamp - no problem at all - just double click the file you just downloaded and follow the screens, I decided to go for the 32GB FAT partition and will most likely use the laptop with a small external Hard drive or maybe upgrade to a bigger one later on.
  • During the process you will have to insert a CD where Bootcamp will save the required vista drivers for your MacBook.
  • The MacBook then restarted directly in Windows mode and asks you to insert the operation system you wish to install. In my case the Vista Home Premium CD followed by the serial number. I also allowed the system to check the number directly online. (You can also upgrade from Microsoft XP but will need in this case to install XP first and upgrade with Vista later.)
  • Vista Installation started and about 30 minutes and a few restarts later everything was done!

That certainly was the easiest OS installation I had done so far - and I now have the choice between OSX 10 (Tiger) and Vista - on a beautiful sleek looking laptop - what more could I want?

I cannot say much about the performance with this setup - but I would not count on the promised 6 hours maximum battery life With regards to software running under Vista - Firefox and Skype work just fine as well as of course Office applications. If you are using Zone Laps as a firewall you will be disappointed as I could not get it running just yet.

So far so good - that's all I can report at the moment but I thought I let you know anyway. Simply because if you are going into a computer store and ask the staff - I only got a very weak smile when I wanted to buy the Apple Mac + Vista, alongside some recommendations buying "VistaforMac" (which as far as I know does not exist!) or emulator software.

    Anyway - It works!

    Best regards,

    Anja

Free iPod Video Converter Software How to Convert DVDs Videos to iPod Format for Free
    By: James Preston

So, you have all kinds of videos that you would like to play on your iPod but you have no idea how to do this? Well, luckily there is software available online that can help you do this.

The first software package is called Free iPod Video Converter. This program will provide you with an easy, complete way in which to completely convert all of your popular video formats to iPod video, which can also handle batches of material at the same time. So, if you have DVD or VHS video to convert, this program will work well for you. The best part is that this program is free and does not contain any spyware or ads of any kind. Your iPod video will both look and sound great thanks to this program, its wizard and detailed HTML help file. It is also great that you can both install and uninstall this software.

Your other option is to use Videora iPod Converter, which is also a free program. It will allow you to convert any of the regular video files that you have on your computer into the iPod format. The company who owns the copyright to this software also has a program that is called Videora, which allows you to automatically download, convert and copy video. It is based on BitTorrent and RSS technology. The entire program is only 6.37MB and it is freeware.

For this reason, they do request that you give them a small donation to help support the development of this program. Of course, they do not force you to do this but it is an option that they request for you to consider. They do offer you good customer support though. You are also asked to report any bugs in the program or give them ideas for features that you would like to see them include in future versions of this program. There are special areas in their forums for this. Otherwise there is a link that you must use if you need anything because they plainly tell you that they are not going to answer an emails.

New postImportant Email Habits Security Tools and Tips

Important Email Habits Security Tools and Tips
    By: James McFarlane

    Forwarding Emails: Do Your Homework!

Every day I see email forwarded by someone trying to warn me of some new threat or with some ?interesting news?. Unfortunately most of these types of forwarded emails are false. In most cases it is harmless forwarding of emails with the only drawback being extra junk in your inbox and floating around the Internet.

In other cases, these emails themselves are a threat. Some emails will inform you of a ?threat? and give you steps to take to ?fix? your computer or ?remove? the threat. Following the ?advice? in these emails can cause problems in some cases.

Please do NOT forward these types of emails or follow the instructions in them without first doing your homework.

Do a search on the ?information? you received. Below are a few good links to sites with information on hoaxes, myths and real threats. There are many sites that will help you find the truth about the emails you get, I like these ones.

    TruthOrFiction.com

This site lists emails and topics and gives you ?Truth? or ?Fiction? information from their research. It can be quite amusing to just browse some of the information they have.

This site is well organized so you can select topics or just do a simple search.

    http://www.truthorfiction.com/

    F-Secure

F-Secure is a European based international computer security company. The information and tools available are very useful for your security.

    ?Phishing?

What is ?Phishing?? It is like fishing in the sense that criminals send out mass emails ?bait? hoping someone bites. The bait is an e-mail out falsely claiming to be a legitimate organization like a bank, credit card company, online payment service, or any service, company or website they think people will trust in an attempt to trick people into giving private information that can be used for identity theft, theft from your bank, online account, etc. The e-mail will direct the unsuspecting person to visit a Web site where they are asked to update personal information, such as user names, passwords, credit card information, and bank account numbers, which the legitimate organization already has. This Web site, however, is spoofed and was set up only to steal information.

    Link manipulation/spoofing

Most methods of phishing use some form of technical deception designed to make a link in an email (and the spoofed website it leads to) appear to belong to the spoofed organization. Misspelled URLs or the use of sub-domains are common tricks used by phishers. Another common trick is to make the anchor text for a link appear to be a valid URL when the link actually goes to the spoofed site.

    Website forgery/spoofing

Some phishing scams use JavaScript to alter the address bar to make it seem legitimate. This is done by placing a picture of the legitimate company?s URL over the address bar, or by closing the original address bar and opening a new one containing the legitimate URL.

In another method of phishing that is quite popular, an attacker uses a trusted website's own scripts against the victim. These types of attacks (cross-site scripting) are particularly nasty, because they direct the user to sign in at their bank or service's own web page, where everything from the web address to the security certificates appears correct. This attack is very hard to spot as it is the link to the website is crafted to carry out the attack.

    Damage caused by phishing

The damage ranges from loss of access to email and other online accounts to loss of money, investments, etc. Phishing is becoming more popular, because of the number of unsuspecting people who are easily tricked into divulging information to phishers. The collected information includes credit card numbers, social security numbers, and mothers' maiden names. It is also possible that identity thieves can add more information to what they have gained through phishing simply by accessing public records. Once this information is acquired, the phishers may use a person's details to create fake accounts in a victim's name, ruin a victim's credit, or even prevent victims from accessing their own accounts. As you can surmise the result can be a destroyed life. That is why it is extremely important everyone learns to recognize phishing and avoid being caught.

Recognizing Phishing and test your Phishing IQ

To help people learn more about phishing and to improve their ability to recognize it there are sites with information and tests you can take.

    http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/email/phishing.mspx

    http://www.sonicwall.com/phishing/

The best advice is to learn to recognize phishing and spoofing. Please check and use the sites above. The next best is to use a browser and email program that help you to recognize phishing and spoofing. Browsers and email programs are adding some protection. I recommend using Firefox for your browser and install an anti-phishing and anti-spoofing add-on. Once you have installed Firefox go to tools, add-ons, hit ?get extensions? and search for the add-ons you want. Use Thunderbird for your email. Both are free and both are more secure than the Microsoft products. Get them here:

    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/products/?flang=en-US

Finally: Read Your Messages in Plain Text

Most e-mails written in HTML (Hypertext Markup Language: the authoring software language used on the Internet) is harmless. However, others contain malicious code. It is safer to set your e-mail program to only show messages in plain text format (often in the options or settings section of the software). This will prevent malicious code from running.

At http://www.PC-Maintenance-Guide.com we will provide you the information you need to maintain your own PC with confidence. You will be more secure and your computing experience will be more efficient and best of all you will save money by not having to pay overpriced techs, shops and geeks.

New postClick an Ads And You Get Spyware Or Adware

Click an Ads And You Get Spyware Or Adware
    By: Jesse Miller

Clicking or downloading something may do more harm than good. Studies shown this is the reason that 90% of all the computers in the world have been either been compromised or crashed because of viruses or spyware.

The hacker may also slink passwords, which are delicate depending on the kind of work that the persona is liability. A rival crowd may get the designs perhaps of a prototype automobile for example and launch this way forward of time.

These threats are not far fetched because in the technological age, character theft and corporate spying are rampant.

The good hearsay is, there is a way to defy these threats. notebook designers have imaginary spyware deduction courses, which can be downloaded and installed in the notebook.

There are two types of spyware deduction software. The first is intended to avoid such threats from inflowing the notebook. The support, which everybody desires, is something that is on a seek and break mission.

Here are a few choices for those everybody afraid about notebook guarantee.

While most working systems in the US use either Windows or Mac, it is only right to jump with Microsoft Beta. This searchs the notebook for any threats and then eliminates it. This course has been around for a few living already, which is why something new and better desires to be made. This is now known as the upholder, which is gratis for pane users.

Another good example is Symantec that has been making courses for a number of living. The spyware remover it has is not gratis. Users can only advantage of a 30 tryout stop at no rate but has to pay a certain fee to maintain enjoying its military.

McAfee is another good example with the sensation of its upshot called Virus examine. Not only does it treaty with viruses because this is also intended to take out spyware that may entered the notebook.

New postThe 7 Principles Of Long Computer Life

The 7 Principles of Long Computer Life
    By: Devin Dabney

    1. Clean the inside

Over the course of time, the insides of computers can become filled with dust and dirt that will eventually cause hardware failure. Dust especially gathers around fans and the motherboard. Cleaning every 2-3 months will work wonders.

    2. Clean the outside

If you dust and wipe down the outside of your computer, many times it prevents some of the dust and dirt from getting inside. Many times the dust sits on the exterior of the machine and finds its way inside over time.

    3. Get proper maintenance

I would compare computers to cars in this area. Would you own a car for 3-4 years and never get the oil changed? I didn't think so. The same thing should be true of a computer. If you're not tech savvy, you need to have a computer professional or someone who is more computer literate run some scans and inspect your computer.

    4. Get to know your computer

Many times errors can be prevented by becoming aware of what your computer can and can't do. It helps if you know how much hard drive space you have, how much memory you have, what operating system you have, etc.

    5. Stay in the loop

Working with clients has taught me a very important lesson. If you are not continually learning about new technologies and trends, you may miss some money-saving tips or alerts that IT professionals may know about. Reading technical articles, joining computer newsletters, and having your computer regularly audited can keep you in the loop.

    6. Use the internet wisely

It is a dangerous world out there and everyone is not on the internet for the same reasons as you. Identity theft is a growing crime and there are many other users who intend to steal from you. If something doesn't seem right, follow your gut instinct and avoid the situation. Also, viruses can destroy your computer hardware and cause you to incur more expenses than necessary.

    7. Ask questions

Many mistakes can be avoided by asking questions. We have all heard it hundreds of times, "No question is a stupid question". This holds true, especially in the ever-advancing world of computers and technology.

New postVoIP Phone Systems For Small Business

VoIP Phone Systems For Small Business

New technology nowadays, VoIP (Voice over IP) is simply the transmission of voice traffic over IP-based network which means internet connection.

VoIP in the business communication has become popular because of the cost advantages to consumers over traditional telephone networks. Why I'm saying like that ? Well, it is because if we're using local telephone calls, we have to pay monthly fee plus higher charges for long-distance calls. BUT, by using VoIP we only have to pay for the Internet connection service & VoIP plans do not charge a per-minute fee for long-distance calls.
    That's great.

XpanderCommunications.com specializes in VoIP Small Business Phone Systems.
By using this new technologies, small business with a lot of branches across the country can share the same phone system on the same private list of extensions across all branch offices equally.

The benefits of using VoIP for your company is the cost are drastically reduce, unlimited free service & support as well as improved long-distance & international calling plans.

New postBlu-ray Encryption For Better Protection

    Blu-ray Encryption For Better Protection
    By: Jay Jeetley

    Blu-ray Protection

Blu-ray discs are here to supersede DVD in every way, be it quality of picture (1080p), interactivity (BD-J), size (50Gb) and now protection.

    CSS

Conventionally the DVD used CSS (content scrambling system) as its encryption, although mediocre, the development of a new encryption would have been time consuming and would have caused delays. Hackers decrypted the system in little time inducing a loss of billions. The main decryption known today is DeCSS created by Jon Lech Johanssen (alias DVD jon), who proclaims in his defense that he simply wanted to back up his own collection of legally purchased DVD.

    Blu-ray

Initially Blu-ray was introduced by Sony as a larger recording media for back up purposes but as there was demand for high definition movies that required high capacity media, the amalgamation of the two was inevitable. Having learned from the mistakes of CSS a better encryption method was needed.

    AACS

AACS (advanced access content system) jointly developed by Sony, Toshiba, Warner, Panasonic, IBM, Microsoft and Intel will be used with both HD-DVD and Blu-ray. This system can stop a device from playing any more movies causing it to be useless. This is done if the machine is hacked to perform an illegal rip. What AACS can do is disable the decryption keys unique to that device. AACS also incorporates an image constrain token (ICT); this applies to analogue video outputs downgrading the HD video signal to a maximum resolution of 960 x 540. ICT is only an option for the video content owner. An audio watermark is another feature of AACS again being optional to the video content owner which is an inaudible signal inserted into the audio track.

    ROM-MARK

In addition to AACS the Blu-ray association have decided to add another two layers to the BD-ROM the ROM-Mark and the BD+. The latter is something we will discuss later.

The ROM-mark is another layer added to the protection of the disc from pirates. It is an analogue level mechanism of bit-by-bit copy protection and will be embedded in pre-recorded ROM media such as movies, music and games. The ROM-mark is invisible to the consumer and requires special Blu-ray manufacturing equipment to be created.

    BD+

BD+ is a variant of a technology called self-protecting digital content (SPDC). This provides dynamic renewable protection. Title specific code is extracted from the disc and embedded into a virtual machine, security software checks are done by the disc to secure its own playback. Inevitably what this does is allows video content providers to renew content protection on BD-ROM players which have been hacked.

    Conclusion

The future of Blu-ray protection is important and imperative in an age of hackers. Their philosophy at getting back at the big movie corporations and their rip-off to consumers not surprisingly has the majority vote with people who want to pay less. Whether this protection will suffice in this day and age is difficult, we must remember that hackers have a lot of time and resources to achieve their goal; however this time round the developers of Blu-ray protection have been working on a better time schedule to come up with something water tight. Unfortunately I believe it will only be within a year before some technique is found to copy Blu-ray movies as very feasible ideas have already been posted on the internet.

Jay Jeetley is a writer for the website Blu-raychoice.com, a resource for Blu-ray News, movies, forums and media.

New postGigaTribe - Private Encrypted P2P Solutions

Private Encrypted P2P Solutions Gaining Popularity Amongst File Exchangers
    By: John Fruttero

Over the years, large-scale peer-to-peer networks such as Kazaa and eMule have enjoyed significant popularity, as users scrambled to download the latest Madonna and Metallica albums without paying a penny. More recently, "Torrents" have also appeared, adding a similar system to the downloading craze, with music and movie fans enjoying free content with just a few clicks.

All of this, though, has resulted in swift protest by armies of lawyers representing both music interests (the RIAA most notably) as well as Hollywood's top movie studios. Individual consumers, "downloaders" of illegal (free) content, have been hit with lawsuits, and have been resigned to pay significant fines as a result of their use of peer-to-peer. Many of these claims have been as high as $5,000.

Now, though, the cat and mouse game appears to be headed for a dead halt as consumers have discovered a new breed of peer-to-peer systems that encrypt all exchanges. This means that not even an ISP can identify the content that's being exchanged, and so intellectual property owners will be unable to enforce the laws that protect copyright owners.

An example of such an application, GigaTribe, has taken Europe by storm and is now poised to become one of the most common P2P solutions in the US. Unlike other software applications, with GigaTribe users don't exchange files with millions, they exchange and share files with small communities of friends and family. However, this new application lets users select specific folders on their harddrives that they want to share, and friends in the network can browse through these folders, and download large files (even entire folders) with ease. Also enticing, is the fact that members of a private network, where people more or less know each other, are unlikely to be sharing corrupted, or "fake" files, such as those injected into file sharing networks by record companies. A number of other companies have followed suit, and have launched similar offerings.

This sort of private P2P business is also redefining the way individuals communicate, as it eliminates the need for complicated FTP applications when users need to send someone a large file. Chat features are also common, and allow users to describe where to find certain files, as well as what files are available on a user's harddrive. Users can also set up these applications to access their own computers from remote locations.

Amidst all of these developments, it is unclear how the record companies and movie studios will respond. It is especially unclear whether they can respond at all, considering that it is technically impossible to "crack" encrypted exchanges and that any attempt to invade the privacy of small communities will be met with vehement protests, and possible boycotts of cultural products. Perhaps these new (and private) peer to peer systems will become as acceptable as, say, lending a CD to a friend down the street.

    Firefox 3 Features

I can't wait to download Firefox 3 since I'm a BIG fan of Firefox. Hope they can create much better web browser. Firefox 2 is already good, but I hope they can do much better for Firefox 3.

During the Firefox 3 ( code name Gran Paradiso ) meeting, developers released a preliminary list of requirements for Firefox 3.

Among the list of mandatory requirements, read, what is the most likely to be included in Firefox 3 we have:

    1) Improved Add-on features - Less steps to install, noticeable alert when updates are available, also allowing add-ons to be installed without rebooting Firefox.
    2) Support for remote bookmarks
    3) Support Microsoft CardSpace & openID ( i don't know what it is...you can try searching Google about this )
    4) Airbag, the Google backed open source crash reporting tool will replace currently licensed TalkBack.
