Imagine a classroom full of young students somewhere is America. The instructor enters the room and notices a number of students listening to personal MP3 players. the instructor, in a somewhat burly voice snaps; "Okay, you can turn those Ipods off now!". This little scene brings out a well-know phenomenon, that of denoting something, in this case, a personal media player, by a popular brand name - Ipod.

Apple's Ipod has become synonymous with any number of media, or MP3 players on the market. A worthy competitor to the Ipod; the Zune, has recently appeared on the scene. The Zune's fight to overtake the Ipod will be difficult because the Ipod currently dominates the personal media player market. I heard a stand-up comedian recently spout a blurb to the effect of; "A Zune? that's like an Ipod, only not as cool...".

Although the Ipod currently has the advantage, Microsoft will be supporting the Zune and a regular 'battle of the Titans' is shaping up. The Zune is a great-looking media player. I personally prefer the Zune's design, but a majority of fashion conscious people will purchase the Ipod based solely on how they imagine they will be perceived by other people, and no amount of technical specifications or feature comparisons will dissuade them from their choice.

Many people, however, value function over style, and the techie crowd will concern themselves with the technical specifications and performance features of products when making a purchase. When you compare the Zune to the Ipod with such criteria in mind, the Zune starts looking... Well, cool!

The Zune has a larger video display, .5 inches, or about 30 percent larger in fact. The Zune can communicate via WiFi over a limited area, and Zune owners can share media wirelessly - what the Zune creators tout as a kind of 'social connectivity' feature of the player. The Zune models also have a built-in FM tuner. Do any of the Ipod models have WiFi or an FM tuner? No.

Ipod does give consumers more choice in terms of memory capacity however, with some Ipod models having up to 80GB,(Giga-bytes) of hard drive memory. The Zune offers only models with 30GB. It's great that Ipod gives people a choice in terms of memory, but really folks, 30GB of memory is certainly adequate. 30GB can store about 7,500 songs, and if each tune was only three minutes long, that's still over two-weeks of continuous 24 hour play without hearing the same song twice. .

I have not given a thorough comparison of features or performance of either the Ipod or the Zune. I hope, however, to have brought up some interesting points for discussion, not only about what will be the two top contenders in the personal media player market, but also about some fascinating behaviors we have as American consumers.

By default, windows xp starts a lot of services. Most are used for good working of Windows, but some of them are unnecessary, and are there only to slower computer performances. More, some of the services expose your computer to attacks, allowing remote users to access your computer.

To access services, go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and run Services, you will get a list with all services, with status and description for each. You can go trough each service and read the description, all are self explanatory, you don't need much knowledge to understand what each means, but i will give you a list with some Services that you can disable without any problems.

1. Alerter

Notifies selected users and computers of administrative alerts. If the service is stopped, programs that use administrative alerts will not receive them. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

I don't think it is necessary for a computer to continuously annoy user with alerts.

2. Application Layer Gateway Service

Provides support for 3rd party protocol plug-ins for Internet Connection Sharing and the Internet Connection Firewall

If you want to share your internet connections leave it on, but i don't think you want to share your connection with others, because almost all internet service providers don't want their users to share internet, and companies or big networks which want to share connection use routers which are cheap.

3. Automatic Updates

Enables the download and installation of critical Windows updates. If the service is disabled, the operating system can be manually updated.

How many times you found automatic updates necessary ? Microsoft software will always have problems, when they try to fix something they will make other security holes, if you want to be secure, you should use a firewall.

4. Background Intelligent Transfer Service

Uses idle network bandwidth to transfer data.

This will work well for automatic updates, but are you sure you want that your computer to connect to internet and download stuff that you don't want to ?

5. ClipBook

Enables ClipBook Viewer to store information and share it with remote computers. If the service is stopped, ClipBook Viewer will not be able to share information with remote computers. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

This will share your clipboard with other computers on the network, seriously, why would you want to do this?

6. Computer Browser

Maintains an updated list of computers on the network and supplies this list to computers designated as browsers. If this service is stopped, this list will not be updated or maintained. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

If you frequently copy files from other computers in your network, don't disable it, else, it is waste of resources.

7. Cryptographic Services

Provides three management services: Catalog Database Service, which confirms the signatures of Windows files; Protected Root Service, which adds and removes Trusted Root Certification Authority certificates from this computer; and Key Service, which helps enroll this computer for certificates. If this service is stopped, these management services will not function properly. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

This is used when you want to pass certificates to the network. Unless you are in a large corporate network you don't need this.

8. Distributed Transaction Coordinator

Coordinates transactions that span multiple resource managers, such as databases, message queues, and file systems. If this service is stopped, these transactions will not occur. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

This is used only if you want to access filesystems and databases on the network.

9. Error Reporting Service Allows error reporting for services and applications running in non-standard environments.

Probably you have seen enough times the dialog box with "send error report" on it.

10. Help and Support

Enables Help and Support Center to run on this computer. If this service is stopped, Help and Support Center will be unavailable. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

How many times you got help from their help and service center?

11. IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service

Manages CD recording using Image Mastering Applications Programming Interface (IMAPI). If this service is stopped, this computer will be unable to record CDs. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

Don't turn this off if you have CD writer attached on your computer.

12. Messenger

Transmits net send and Alerter service messages between clients and servers. This service is not related to Windows Messenger. If this service is stopped, Alerter messages will not be transmitted. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

This don't have anything in common with Windows Messenger or any other Messenger client. It is used to send messages trough network.

13. NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing

Enables an authorized user to access this computer remotely by using NetMeeting over a corporate intranet. If this service is stopped, remote desktop sharing will be unavailable. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

Do you want other computers from your network or from internet to access the desktop of your computer ? if yes, don't disable this, else do this for security.

14. Remote Desktop Help Session Manager

Manages and controls Remote Assistance. If this service is stopped, Remote Assistance will be unavailable. Before stopping this service, see the Dependencies tab of the Properties dialog box.

Again, if you want to connect to this computer from other place, change your operating system.

15. Remote Registry

Enables remote users to modify registry settings on this computer. If this service is stopped, the registry can be modified only by users on this computer. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

I don't think you want to change your registry from other computer.

16. Wireless Zero Configuration

Provides automatic configuration for the 802.11 adapters

If you don't have an wireless connection, disable this. But, i tell you from my experience, the first thing my wireless internet service provider administrator told me to do was to disable Wireless zero configuration, in this way, the connection will work better.

Since the launch of the Zune prior to the holiday season in 2006, the Zune has claimed the number two position for all hard drive based mp3 players behind the Apple iPod. As a previous iPod user I have been extremely pleased with the Zune. Although the Zune software was a bit difficult to install, since overcoming the initial installation issues everything has worked well. The large three inch viewing screen is a great feature for watching video or viewing pictures and being able to change the orientation from horizontal to vertical comes in handy.

The 30 GB hard drive provides more than enough storage for music, video and photos. You are able to store up to 7,500 songs, 25,000 pictures, or 100 hours of video. I highly recommend signing up for the Zune Pass music subscription for $14.99 per month which allows unlimited downloads to your Zune player. As a former user of Napster, I never found the subscription to be a valuable feature because it was only offered for products with smaller hard drives, which meant that you had to constantly delete songs in order to add new songs. That is not a problem with the large 30 GB hard drive on the Zune.

Another added feature provided by the Zune is the built in FM-tuner. Although I rarely use this feature, it is nice to have if you want to be able to listen to a local radio station instead of your stored files.

One feature of the Zune that I do not see much value in is the ability to share music with other Zune players wirelessly. Once a song is sent to another Zune, the user can only listen to the track three times within a three day period, then the song expires and is no longer playable unless it is flagged and purchased from the Zune marketplace. I recommend disabling this feature because it decreases battery life.

Overall, I would recommend the Zune to anyone looking to purchase a new mp3 player. Although, the wheel design is not really a click wheel like the famous iPod design, the product is user-friendly and easy to navigate from menu to menu. It has all of the normal features such as shuffle, repeat, and play all so you don't have to keep clicking once a song completes..

I fully expect the Zune to continue to catch up with the iPod in the hard drive based mp3 player marketplace. According to thestreet.com, Microsoft is planning a new marketing and advertising blitz for the spring and will be offering new colors and a bigger splash with their product features. With the money of Bill Gates behind such a strong product, it only makes sense that the Zune will continue to close the gap with Apple.
